Traditional Butoh theatre mixed with acrobatics. Ulalena even has a tissue artist. Hula and modern dance are blended to bring you the legend of Hawaiian origin and mythical stories. According to an ancient Hawaiian chant, Ulalena is a wind unique to Maui, a red-colored rain.

This is a unique and compelling story worth telling. I went to see Ulalena with my friend Tony. He is a trapeze artist and as soon as he got into town to visit he told me he wanted to go see Ulalena because his teacher had told him about the wonderful acrobats in the show. She was referring to the tissue artists specifically. Tissue is awesome to see. The acrobat dangles from one or two pieces of fabric hanging from the ceiling and do all kinds of graceful flips and spins on it. It's really an amazing thing to see.

The other thing about Ulalena is the music. The music is all live and they use all kinds of crazy instruments. I like sitting on the side of the theatre with the musicians so I can see them work their magic. It's pretty incredible the sounds they get from their instruments. This is a really stellar production that's worth seeing, for kids and adults alike.
