Here's the thing about learning to surf in Maui: people in the water are so nice. I
learned to surf in Hawaii and never surfed anywhere else until I moved back to California.
Maybe its the cold, but I think it's the people in the water that make all the difference.
People are pretty laid back and mellow in Maui, and most of Hawaii. Unless you tread into
some territory where you dont belong. But for the most part, you give respect and you get
respect is the law of the land in Hawaii. It wonderful. When I came back to California the
thing that really got me was how rude cats are in the water here. The word cocky comes to
mind; the thing is that most of them arent even that good!
Nah, I'd rather learn in nice weather around nice people if you ask me. It's so
sweet. If you really want to be a soul surfer and really appreciate your time in the
water and mother nature's gorgeous gifts, you gotta go surf in Maui, that's it. Breakwall
in Lahaina has lots of surf schools and you can find a lesson there pretty easy. You
should probably book in advance cuz the lessons fill up fast, especially in high season, you
know? After you've taken a lesson, if you're a beginner you can hone your skills and rent
a board from one of the schools, they'll hook you up, and you can take a few waves on your
own.
Getting a lesson is really important. The instructors will teach you surf etiquette. A
little bit of etiquette goes a long way, people. Believe me. It will keep you from getting
in the way, getting yelled at, and possibly, getting your ass kicked. Trust that. Take a
surf lesson. Take a lesson.
Some of my best memories are from sunset sessions in west maui. If you get lucky
you'll be there one night when the sky turns completely pink. Yes, that's right, pink.
If you're really really lucky it'll light up pink and then turn purple at the very end.
Its unbelievably magical. Even when it rains, i tell you, that's the spot, that's the
thing to do. Quiet and pure.

Learning to surf is easier than you think,
and once you've learned the basics from an experienced surfer you'll be on
your way. Maui always has surf, practically all year long. It gets summer waves
generated from Tahiti and the south Pacific in the summertime, and waves all winter long from the
north Pacific. You can't go wrong. Learning to surf is really fun, and extra special in the warm
waters of a tropical island. Maui is known for its world-class waves and surfers alike.
Let an experienced local teach you and you WILL get more waves.
All of the lessons shown here take place
in Lahaina, close to Kaanapali and West Maui resorts. All of the
surf instructors are certified in CPR and First Aid. Your first
lesson includes all surf equipment and gear. All you have to bring
is a pair of shorts and some sunscreen!
To help you with your surf lesson on maui, you'll get a rash guard, a soft top board so you
don't bean yourself, a leash, booties, and a great local instructor. The rash guard helps protect
your skin while you paddle on your board, and booties protect your feet from the coral and reef.
Outrageous Adventures is one of the best schools, and they are so confident in their instruction that they
guarantee that you will surf or your money back. Take
a lesson and get more waves while you are here on vacation!
Your first lesson will concentrate on the basics - paddling, positioning to set up for the wave, standing
up on the board, and of course, water safety and surf etiquette. Lessons are about two hours long. If you
already have the basics down, Outrageous Adventures also has intermediate surf lessons to help you
improve your technique and skills.
